Dat die hype er zou komen, had men kunnen verwachten. De wereldpremière van de peperdure rampenfilm vond plaats op het Internationaal Filmfestival van Tokyo. Tijdens die 'proefvaart' werd de film meer dan warm onthaald door de pers. Maar ook het publiek bleek uitbundig (vooral dan toch de Japanse tienermeisjes die een glimp wilden opvangen van de aanwezige hoofdrolspeler Leonardo DiCaprio).
De Europese première van Titanic ging de Amerikaanse een maand vooraf. In aanwezigheid van Prins Charles werd op 18 november de rode loper uitgerold voor Cameron en zijn crew. Na afloop regende het goed nieuws over de Londense vertoning en ook hier moest DiCaprio bijgestaan worden om zonder al te grote kleerscheuren in zijn limo te geraken (eigenaardig toch dat er altijd over de mannelijke hoofdrolspeler wordt bericht terwijl Kate Winslet minstens even groots werk aflevert).
Op 19 december was het dan zover. Titanic stond samen met andere nieuwe Amerikaanse films, waaronder Tomorrow Never Dies, Spielbergs Amistad en Coppola's Rainmaker, te dringen om een winnende plaats te veroveren in de filmarena. De recensie van Janet Maslin in de New York Times sprak boekdelen: 'Cameron's magnificent Titanic is the first spectacle in decades that honestly invites comparison to Gone with the Wind. Titanic the joke of the summer. Now it's the movie of the year. This film is especially delicate in its slow way of letting the gravity of the situation become clear. Much scarier than any explosion-filled caper film is the simple assessment from the ship's master builder: "In an hour or so, all this will be at the bottom of the Atlantic". This Titanic is too good to sink.'
Maar niet iedereen wordt op eenzelfde manier bekoord door de prent. Op de discussielijst van de krant liepen de reacties nog geen etmaal na de première als een sneltrein binnen. Een greep uit de commentaren van ontevreden bioscoopgangers: 'I saw Titanic last night and was somewhat disappointed. This movie is largely dependent upon the romance between Rose (Winslet) and Jack (DiCaprio), but the preponderence of hackneyed dialogue and horrid one-liners undermines the drama as much as the Atlantic did the Titanic. Lines like "I'm tumbleweed blowing in the wind" are so trite that one might wonder whether Cameron pulled them from a dime-store romance-novel. One-liners may work for Schwarzenegger, but not for a supposed drama of this sort.'
Naast deze opmerking dat Cameron beter een professionele scenario-schrijver onder de arm had genomen, vinden sommigen dat de film een echte tweede ondergang is: 'What did happen with Janet Maslin and her amazing review of Titanic? Kate Winslet may be good, but is not Vivien Leigh and DiCaprio is no Clark Gable. She must have an overdose on so many bad movies that this looked like a real epic. Besides, we all know the Titanic sunk' en 'Titanic, Blechhh. I never wanted a ship to sink so badly in my life. If the original passengers were half as bad as the cast, they got what they deserved.'
Anderen zijn van mening dat de romance niet overtuigt en dat alleen het schip overtuigend zinkt: 'It is the ship, not the stars, that carry this film. The TITANIC is the biggest star. It is as if two characters from Beverly Hills 90210 have wandered into the shoot and run hellforleather through the lovely sets, being rude to everyone else aboard, who withdraw from them in surprise. Neither Kate nor Leonardo are believable as turn-of-the-century people' en 'The picture is schizophrenic to begin with: a gorgeously detailed documentary about the ship on the one hand; a truly feeble, unconvincing love story on the other.'
Natuurlijk waren de positieve reacties groter in aantal en erg emotioneel geladen: 'I went to see Titanic thinking that I would be merely entertained with ability of technical wizardry to realistically recreate an epic disaster. Perhaps, I also thought, I might wath a reasonably good storyline unfold. Instead, I was treated to a film that was much more than that; it was an enduring experience. I sat in my seat when the movie ended not able to leave, my mind still sorting through a range of emotions. Many wept' en 'Wow! Cameron's Titanic transcends ordinary cinema. This 3+ hour masterpiece grabs you, pulls you in, and chills you to the marrow. I did not expect this at all. I expected overblown filmatic hubris and cheesy effects. Boy, was I wrong. Really, once the berg hits, this film moves... fast, breathlessly fast. Bring hankies!'
Voor enkelen kwam de schok zelfs met enige vertraging: 'I saw it three days ago now and its images are still powerfully with me.'
De commerciële handicap dat de film drie uur en een kwartier duurt stoort sommigen nauwelijks. Integendeel. 'The film felt more like a very nice two hours to me. After sitting throught the overwrought Amistad (which was 2 1/2 hours), I sit here shocked that Titanic was longer than Spielberg's mediocre effort! Realism in Titanic? I sure saw it. Feeling like a passenger aboard the doomed vessel? I felt like one. Forget Bond. I hope tomorrow will die for that tired franchise!'
Niet alleen over de plas waarin het wrak rust, ook bij ons sloeg de Titanic-gekte in als een bom. Donderdag al waren de enkele CD's met de filmscore al de deur uit, affiches uitverkocht of nog niet beschikbaar. Maar bovenal blijkt uit de ticketverkoop en het langdurige wachten van de bioscoopbezoeker hoezeer de film tot de verbeelding spreekt. In het weekend dat volgde op de release waren in de Brusselse Kinepolis reeds anderhalf uur vóór de vertoningen alle stoeltjes uitverkocht. Eenzelfde scenario tekende zich af in de bioscopen van Antwerpen en Leuven.
En als je mensen rondom jou vraagt naar hun mening: hartverscheurend, beklijvend, super-romantisch vinden ze het. Toch is ook hier niet iedereen het zonder meer eens met de stelling als zou Titanic te mooi zijn om te zinken. Het bedrag doet niet anders verwachten dat dat je zo'n produkt aflevert. Vele mensen stellen zich de vraag waar we naartoe gaan met die mega-bedragen.
Ook bij ons vindt niet iedereen het jonge acteertalent geslaagd. Maar ja, historisch gezien konden het niet anders dan erg jonge acteurs worden. Wie wordt er tegenwoordig nog honderd en één lentes? Wat men er ook van denkt: stuiverromannetje of Gone With The Wind- waarig, deze film gaat ze binnen rijven. Niet alleen de dollars maar ook de beeldjes.
