Je kan deze week niet om Chicago heen. De verfilming van Bob Fosses musical opende de festiviteiten in Berlijn en kreeg nu dus ook 13 oscarnominaties op zijn naam, waaronder die voor beste film, vrouwelijke hoofd- en bijrol en mannelijke bijrol. Chicago won eerder al de Golden Globe voor beste musical of komedie. Als de prent er medio maart in slaagt zijn nominatie te verzilveren, treedt die in de voetsporen van Oliver! uit 1968. In de categorie beste film moet Chicago in het strijdperk met Gangs of New York, The Hours, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers en The Pianist.
Opvallend is dat de oudjes het dit jaar goed doen. Meryl Streep kreeg haar 13e oscarnominatie, een record in de geschiedenis, voor haar rol in Adaptation. De actrice brak daarmee het record van Katharine Hepburn. Jack Nicholson werd al voor de 12e keer genomineerd. Hij is in de running voor beste acteur. Voor Julianne Moore zit de kans erin dat ze twee oscars wint: ze werd zowel voor Far From Heaven als The Hours genomineerd.
